Telephone Sequence Tutorial - Drag and Drop Blocks
In this tutorial we will build a sequence from scratch, while utilizing several of the SmartSound editing features.
Step 1
1. Run the SmartSound® for Multimedia application by double-clicking its icon in the Finder.
2. Click the button "Editor".
3. Select "SmartSound Browser" from the File menu.
4. Select "Telephone" in the list (you will need to scroll downward).
5. Click the "Open in Editor" button.
6. Click "Done".
Step 2
1. Locate the block "Dialing".
2. Click and drag the block up into the Sequencer.
3. Also drag the blocks "555-1212" and ".5 sec silence".
4. Click the "Play" button in the Sequencer toolbar to listen.
Step 3
1. Add the block "line click" (this time try holding the Command key while double-clicking the block. This will add the block to the end of the sequence).
2. Add "Busy Signal".
3. To extend the busy signal you can either drag the same block up several times or try the "Add a Block" Smart Tool from the Sequencer toolbar.
4. Listen by clicking the play button.
5. Click the "Zoom In" button (magnifying glass +) from the toolbar to get a better view of the blocks in the sequencer.
Step 4
1. In this step we will change the busy signal into a phone ringing.
2. Remove the busy signal blocks from the end of the sequence by clicking the "Remove a Block" Smart Tool. This tool will remove the last block in the sequence.
3. Add the following blocks in this order - "Ringing", "ring space", "Ringing", "line click".
4. Listen to your changes.
Step 5
1. Select "SmartSound Browser" from the File menu.
2. Select "Boulevard Funk" in the list.
3. Click the "Open in Editor" button.
4. Click "Done".
Step 6
1. The new file (just opened from the Browser) will be displayed at the bottom of the block window with red blocks.
2. Drag up the blocks - "Sax Tune", "sax 2".
3. Click the "Quick Ending" Smart Tool (notice that the computer added the block "low hold" to the end of the sequence).
4. Listen again.
Step 7
1. Select the last three blocks in the sequence (the red ones).
2. Choose "Telephone" from the Effects menu.
3. The "How Much" dialog box will appear - click "OK".
4. Now listen to your finished sequence. Notice that the Telephone effect made the music sound as if it was being played over a telephone.
Telephone Sequence Part 2 - Recording and Merging Blocks
In this part of the tutorial we will create a new block using the desktop microphone, and merging it with other blocks.
Note: Not all Macintosh computers come equipped with a microphone.
Step 8
1. Select "Record Block" from the Blocks menu.
2. Uncheck the "Monitor" Box to avoid feedback with the microphone. (If recording from a tape machine you will want "Monitor" to be checked.)
3. Click the red Record button to begin recording.
4. Record your voice saying "Hi, leave me a message..."
5. Click the Stop button when finished recording.
6. You can rerecord the block until you are happy with it.
7. Click "Save"
8. Name the new block "My Message" and click "Save"
Step 9
1. Locate your new block "My Message" at the bottom of the Block Window.
2. Click and Drag the block while holding down the Command key.
3. Drag the block on top of the block "Sax Tune" in the Sequencer and release.
